Remembrance

When you remember what God has done, you feel close to the Lord.

What is remembrance?

Connecting with God through remembrance is entering into His gates with thanksgiving and His courts with praise (Psalm 100). When we begin to thank Him and be grateful for what He has done and is doing, we enter into closeness with Him in our daily encounters.

“I know your works, your toil and your patient endurance, and how you cannot bear with those who are evil, but have tested those who call themselves apostles and are not, and found them to be false. I know you are enduring patiently and bearing up for my name's sake, and you have not grown weary. But I have this against you, that you have abandoned the love you had at first. Remember therefore from where you have fallen; repent, and do the works you did at first. If not, I will come to you and remove your lampstand from its place, unless you repent. Yet this you have: you hate the works of the Nicolaitans, which I also hate. He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To the one who conquers I will grant to eat of the tree of life, which is in the paradise of God.” Revelation 2:2-7

If you are beginning to feel your relationship with God is growing stale, incorporate remembrance into your daily encounters. Revelation 2:2-7 shares how the church in Ephesus was exhorted in their patient endurance and had not grown weary. But one thing Jesus had against them was they abandoned the love they had at first. Have you lost the passion and fire for loving God when you first met Him? The cure for finding the love that you had at first is remembering! Remember what God has called you out of. Remember the encounters you had with Him when He showed His faithfulness and goodness to you. Remember how He performed miracles in your life. Remember how He walked you through the darkest valley and lead you beside still waters. Remember how He restored you! Remembrance brings us back to our first love.

If remembering the past is difficult, know that Jesus is the Healer and is extending healing to you. Ask Jesus where He was with you in the past. Ask Him for His presence that brings healing to every hurtful memory and give them to God. You are creating new memories with Him now! He is faithful to you and will walk with you. God promises that He does not abandon you! Deuteronomy 31:8 says, “It is the Lord who goes before you. He will be with you; he will not leave you or forsake you. Do not fear or be dismayed.”

Encouragement for connecting with God through Remembrance:

  • Remembrance is simply thanking Him! Take intentional time to thank Him. When Jesus healed the ten lepers in Luke 17:11-19, there was only one that went back to thank Him. When you thank Him in your daily encounters, powerful things take place.

  • Take communion in your daily encounters this month. Remember what His body and blood have done for you to enter into communion with Him daily. Incorporate communion in your daily encounters and watch how thankfulness ushers you into His presence in being one with Him.

  • Write out chronological acts of God’s goodness in your life to see how He was present to cultivate thankfulness.

  • Remembrance + Fasting

Remember your past fasts. Bring to remembrance how God sustained you, lead you, and brought breakthrough from past fasts. Have this remembrance spark a new love for Him in your daily encounters.

  • Remembrance + Adoration:

Sing out Psalm 100. Begin to minister to God’s heart through adoration by being thankful for what He has done and is doing! Ascribe to Him his goodness and faithfulness!

  • Remembrance + Meditation:

Bring to remembrance His words. As you meditate on scripture, think back on the history you’re meditating on. You’re saturating your mind with the written account of God’s history with His people!

  • Remembrance + Creation:

Go back to places in creation where you have had encounters with God. Remember what He has spoken to you and how far He has taken you since then. Let thanksgiving arise within you and spend time thanking Him.

  • Remembrance + Solitude:

When you start your daily encounter in solitude, let thanksgiving be the first thing you talk to God about. Begin to thank Him for who He is and what He has done for you!

  • Remembrance + Expression:

Before creating through your expression, take time to think back on your memories of God. How has He been faithful to you? How has He revealed Himself to you? Play those memories in your head as you create and dedicate that expression to what God brings to your mind.

  • Remembrance + Conversation:

As you connect with God in conversation, go back to old journals to see what He has said to you in the past. Let the remembrance of those encounters bring hope and faith for what He is speaking to you today. As you remember, ask God how you can steward today what He spoke to you in the past.

  • Remembrance + Movement:

Go to places you have encountered God through movement before. Remember the encounters you had while you move. Let the remembrance of His faithfulness of meeting you before usher you into new encounters today.

  • Remembrance + Reformation:

As you connect with God in reformation, be sure to remember how God has brought reformation to your life! Let thankfulness for how He has made crooked ways in you straight through the Cross!

  • Remembrance + Compassion:

Remember God’s compassion towards you in your daily encounters! Remembering His compassion to you specifically will usher you into a deeper level of intimacy between you and God. This intimacy will spill over as you move into compassions or others.

  • Remembrance + Learning:

Study how the Israelites were instructed to remember. Israel was instructed to remember before going into a new season. What has God taught you that He is asking you to remember before you learn something new?
